REMEMBER the time you went shopping and the salesman laid out all the goodies and convinced you to buy them even when you were merely looking at them?
Well, what you went through was a m ild form of hypnosis when the salesman got you to buy what you were earlier just looking. How? Your inner you was caught by an energy stronger than yours, and you obeyed someone else's instructions. Hypnotism does not mean only stage shows with a lot of hype and where people perform acts in front an audience but on an every day basis mild hypno tism is going on in almost every sphere of life. In simple words hypnotism is making some one act in a particular way, in the direction that you decide.
Reaching a state in which a person's conscious and thinking mind is bypassed and a communication with the subconscious mind is established is common definition. Hypnosis typically involves an in troduction to the procedure during which the sub ject is told that some suggestions will be offered for imaginative experiences. The hypnotic induction is an initial suggestion for using one's imagination, and may contain further elaborations of the introduction.
The simplest form of partial hypnotism is used in yoga, which is commonly called Shavasan, where a simple mind exercise is used to make one relax by self imparting commands. This is one of the two most commonly used types of hypno sis where one follows imparted suggestions or as they are given like in a stage show. In these times the subject is in a hypnotic trance. And the other is when the subject follows the suggestions after they are imparted, and well out of the earlier induced hypnotised state.
There is also clinical hypnosis in which the patient is taken step by step to the alpha level and certain suggestions or instructions are imparted. This is generally done to get rid of extreme fear especially when other remedies have failed. It is also used in the treatment of weight management, reduction of phobias, sports improvement, and most importantly to stop smoking.
The alpha state is commonly associated with closing one's eyes, relaxation, and daydreaming. Hypnotism when used with time regression can solve many current problems which have roots going back to the past. Certain commands given under this system i s very useful in implementing personality development, overcome specific fears and obsessions, stress relieving, etc.
Though the hypnotist induces you to the required state, it is important to know that not every person can be hypnotised quickly. It is really the ability of a person to get hypnotised and the hypnotist is just a catalyst. Further it is observed that children respond well to hypnotic induction, whereas the elderly per sons require more sittings to get acquainted to hyp notic inductions. Also, it has been observed that one cannot be commanded to act against ones moral beliefs. Hypnosis cannot cause anyone to do some thing against their will or that contradicts their values. First, a hypnotherapist is ethically required to make only those suggestions that support agreed-upon outcomes. Second, clients are not receptive to suggestions that go against their morals or values because receptivity is one of the ingredients of suc cess in hypnosis. As an add-on to psychotherapy hypnosis helps clients enter a relaxed, comfortable, trance state for obtaining specific therapeutic outcomes. With clinical hypnosis the therapist can make suggestions designed to help the client formulate specific internal processes (feelings, memories, images and internal self-talk) that will lead to mutually -agreed-upon outcomes.
Hypnotic suggestions can influence behavior when the listener is:
(a) relaxed, receptive and open to suggestions
(b) experiences visual, auditory, and/or kinesthetic representations of the suggestions
(c) anticipates and envisions that these sugges tions will result in future outcomes.
Hypnosis is not mind control or brainwashing. People change their minds and actions throughout their lives. When such changes occur as a result of exposure to specific irnformation, it is because this information has been presented through persuasion. A hypnotherapist uses communicative methods of persua sion and influence; so do people who market goods and services; so do teachers, politicians, lawyers, entertainers, parents, and ministers.
During a trance you are not immobilized. You know precisely where you are the entire time .You can adjust your position, scratch, sneeze, or cough. You can open your eyes and bring yourself out trance at any time you wish. During trance, you can still hear sound around you, like a phone ringing. You can alert yourself and respond to any situation that needs your immediate attention. You oriented as to person, place, and time. You can even hold a conversation in trance. Trance is not sleep, although some people get so relaxed in trance that they may fall asleep. The is no problem because some part of the mind continues to listen to the voice of the hypnotherapist. In trance, sleeping subjects can still follow instructions such as moving a finger, taking a deep breath, or awakening themselves when they are told to do so.
Remember: hypnosis cannot solve every problem. Even with hypnosis, it may still be necessary for you to do some planning and research about the types of changes you want to achieve. You must still take action to get results. Hypnosis is not a cure-all. Hypnosis can be effective in many cases, but there are no guarantees that hypnosis will work for you.
