A SPIRITUAL AWAKENING

If you wish to gain yogic awakening and spiritual intelligence, then the age-old science or kundalini is just the thing for you. Nasser Lalljee explains some more on this technique

Kundalini is a Sanskrit word meaning either 'coiled up' or 'coiling like a snake'. The symbol of coiling snakes is thought to be an ancient symbolic representation of

Kundalini physiology.

Vishvanath Thatte Shastri,an exponent of this knowledge says, “The concept of kundalini comes from yogic philosophy of ancient India and refers to the infinite intelligence behind yogic awakening and spiritual maturation. It is invisible to the naked eye, and according to the masters it is based in the Root Chakra (Muladha Chakra), in three and one-half turns around the sacrum. Chakras and kundalini are absolutely inseparable, and the rising is always through the chakras, which are based along the spine.”

He adds, 'The path of enlightenment begins with admission of the science of knowing and awakening the kundalini. This is also referred to as “pranic awakening”. Uplifted or intensified life-energy is called pranotthana and is supposed to originate from an apparent reservoir of subtle bio-energy at the base of the spine.”

Only under a highly evolved spiritual master and special meditative exercises and techniques can be used to activate the kundalini (a body of energy and finer substance) within the concept of a subtle body. Kundalini-experiences are often understood in terms of the Hindu chakra system. According to Hindu tradition, the kundalini raises from the root-chakra up through the spinal channel, through the chakras activating then as it passes through each one. As each chakra is said to contain special characteristics, spiritual powers (siddhis) are also believed to arise. The rising of the kundalini to the infinite power, through the seven chakras, is akin to the seven veils or seven heavens separating man from God, being lifted.

"It is difficult-for modern science to accept the same as a true science only because the scientists, who are originators of the present sciences, do hot have the sufficient know how of this discipline. Moreover, the masses are always after quick earnings and comforts, with out giving a second thought in a day to think about cause-effect relationship for all that happens around and for them. Therefore there would be very few to follow this practice," explains Shastri.

One also finds symbols of kundalini in many different cultural legacies, such as Mercury's serpent, which is an alchemical symbol for the process of psychic metamorphosis. The Gnostic's accepted the serpent to represent the spinal cord. In an cient Greek and later, Roman mythology, we find Asclepius, the God healing. Hi is seen holding a staff, which is entwined with a serpent (or sometimes two). The staff represents the central support of the human body or spinal cord (physical location of the sushumna). In Rome Aescaluius came to be represented by mercury who usually held a healing staff called the caduceus. The one or two coiled snakes or serpents entwined around the staff represent the kundaline, which rises along the spinal cord and reaching to crown chakra.
